Description

Product Description

Leica ambassador photographer Phil Penman understands New York City as a “kind of living thing in itself”―a creature of unrelenting motion and metamorphosis and a thing of serendipitous beauty. For over two decades, he has kept his fingers on the pulse of the city, pounding the pavement on the frenzied streets as a portraitist of local personalities, fine art photographer documenting the sublime cityscape, and a paparazzo, chasing stars who circulate through the world’s greatest city from around the globe. From undercover snaps of Michael Jackson to a high- speed race against law enforcement for Britney Spears, Penman’s personal anecdotes and unfiltered insights take readers behind the flashing lights, offering insider access into the mad-dash lives of the paparazzi. With years of hunting down the celebrity buzz all around New York City, Penman has also witnessed and documented all that the city has to offer, from its majestic urban geography to the colorful locals and their unapologetic idiosyncrasies. From the mundane to the sublime, the grime and glamour, Street profiles the citizens, celebrities, and the city itself with an artist’s eye, taking readers out to the center of the action in the city that never sleeps.

Derivative, cliche, and seemingly more about paparazzi work than street photography. Disappointed.

I was very excited for this book, and I was very disappointed. It was clear that the publisher and photographer felt that his work as a paparazzo was more important than his impromptu street photography. It isn’t. The paparazzi images are just what you would expect: a celebrity trying to get in the car, walk in the park with their children, etc. Definitely not anything I care about as someone who bought this book of “street photography” to see just that. Also, there are long form stories about the celebrity photography and next to nothing about the street work. Those stories seem to be more about the photographer making sure we know he “used to be a bike racer” thank anything else, as he mentions it in nearly every single story. There are a few decent pictures, of course, but nothing I have not seen from the many legends of street before, or from contemporaries like Matt Stuart. His work is also over-edited in many cases, inconsistent, and unmemorable. I would pass on this if given a second chance. The book itself is designed and executed at a high level, but the images seem like they don’t belong in a single collection, as they are all over the place.

You might have learned about this book from Phil’s excellent Instagram feed. What you will quickly realize from this beautifully printed book is that the quiet, contemplative work you are accustomed to seeing on Instagram was informed by a career as a celebrity photojournalist (paparazzo). The first section of the book, Citizen, consists mostly of street portraits of the characters of New York. Of the second section, Celebrity, the most interesting for me is what one might call celebrity environmental portraiture, including the paparazzi as design elements. The last section is admittedly my favorite as it’s his City work that drew me to the book in the first place. There is a thread of impeccable timing and composition that runs through his work. Recommended.

It was pure delight to sit down and turn the pages of Phil Penman''s "Street" and to see how beautifully he photographs the ever-changing streets of NYC. He has a wonderful artistic eye and a knack for being at the right place at the right time to capture that special moment. In the "Citizens" section, I was amazed at the sheer number of quirky characters who Phil photographed as he roamed the streets, many of whom were in costume. I also enjoyed the "Celebrity" section on his career and perspective as a paparazzi. His wonderful antidotes on the chase provided the photos with another dimension, and it was very interesting how he included his fellow paparazzi in many of the shots as well. However, I don''t know who was more dangerous, the drug dealers, the security guards, or some of the people he meets every day on the streets of NYC. As a fellow photographer I especially appreciated the section "The City", which includes cityscapes, architecture, as well as street scenes with a wonderful mastery for capturing spontaneous moments and great light. A number of photos were stunning silhouettes, many were photographed at night, and many were taken in different weather conditions. The large format, layout and sequencing for the book was also very well done. It is understandable why Phil Penman is ranked as one of the most influential street photographers alongside industry legends. Penman''s "Street" is a wonderful portrait of an incredibly vibrant city. I will enjoy continuing to follow Phil''s streets on Instagram.

My joy in making photographs is rivaled only by learning from someone who makes them better. Phil Penman’s new book Streets, a beautifully crafted work that documents New York City as it lives and breathes, teaches and inspires. Spend time with any of the images and you will find stories within stories. Embrace the images as a montage and you will have a new or renewed sense of the energy and grace at the heart of the City. Jump into the book, as I did, with a glass of wine and New York Is My Home (Dion and Paul Simon) playing in the background and you just might find yourself rocking the R train from Brooklyn to the Lower East Side for blintzes at Katz’s Deli.

About the content, the book is splited into 3 parts: people photographs, celebrity snaps and city photos.
All the sections are amazing but the one that I liked more is people photography. Phil''s attentive and experienced look captures rare images of unusual moments. The photographs are absolutely spectacular: there are moments of humor, there are intriguing images, there are exciting images. There is no way not to like this book!

I have only ever bought one photo book in my life prior to this. I''m a semi-pro photographer myself and I absolutely love good street photography. I have to say, that Phil Penman, who has clearly worked his backside off over many years in the fast paced and pressurised photo journalistic environment has really excelled in this brilliant piece of work. The quality of the binding, the embossed spine of the book and the layout of the images ooze quality. Phil gives a very brief yet informative introduction to himself and then lets the images do the talking. New York is on my to do list to visit and photograph. The eclectic mix of individuals, with the eccentricity of those who pace the streets of New York is absolutely fascinating. Phil Penman clearly has an eye for really seeing rather than just looking at the environment he is working in. Then he tells a story through his imagery. There are interludes where he writes a short piece that allows the reader to delve a little deeper into this very talented artist. A little insight into the mind of such a person. I truly believe that this work is iconic and I expect it to stand the test of time. A record of life on the streets, warts and all. As I have said, this is the second photo book I have ever purchased for myself and it is truly inspiring. I highly recommend it.

Meet New York Photographer Phil Penman

UK-born, NY-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the rapid flux of New York City's streets for over 25 years. With clients ranging from People Magazine to The Daily Telegraph, he has photographed celebrated living legends, including Jennifer Lopez and Bill Gates, and captured historical moments such as the September 11th Terrorist Attacks. Penman's distinctive style, versatility, and dedication to his craft has won him prestigious awards and exhibitions, including the Leica Fotografie international Picture Prize and distinction as one of the "52 Most Influential Street Photographers" alongside industry legends, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sebastião Salgado.

Be consumed by the makeup of New York.

A beautiful documentation of the ever-changing streets of New York City

The street—it’s living and breathing. Millions of lives dizzyingly moving around us as we go about our daily routines. We choose to see or not see what we want of it; though, if you really look closely, you can discover just about anything—even undercover sting operations in one of the busiest tourist traps in Times Square. But in a city like New York, it’s all too easy to miss it if you don’t stop and look around once in a while because as they say, “life moves pretty fast.” Penman has found this to be true in the 18 years he has trawled the streets of New York City as a photographer.

Instead of just photographing the celebrities, Penman goes out with the intention of capturing people on the streets—people taking their pet turkeys for a walk or spacemen striding down Prince Street in SoHo, which can be far more interesting than a celebrity walking with a cup of Starbucks coffee. In New York, there is always something to see: every day is different. In all this rush, it’s hard to convey in a single image what you’ve experienced during that one fleeting moment. What you’re seeing through this artistic collection of street photography is magical, and for one second, you’re able to capture that moment.

Experience the magical moments of street life in the Big Apple. Capture its people, celebrities and its cityscapes.
